Remark has
been made that anyone reading this blog would conclude that there are a lot of
castles in Germany, and we seem determined to photograph all of them. After
yesterday’s grueling expedition, I have some sympathy with that view, so today
has been declared a castle-free day.
We realized
that we had not fully explored Koblenz, so we set off to do so, initially in
bright sunshine, though that gradually turned to drizzle. A first find was Koblenz’s
answer to the Mannequin Pis in Brussels. Water shoots from his mouth at unpredictable
intervals, and if you’re standing in the wrong place, tough:
The spitting
youth, called the Schängelbrunnen, also appears on manhole covers:
We checked
out a number of churches, including the ancient Basilica of St Kastor,
consecrated in 836:
Nearby was
an art gallery, featuring a very curious exhibition by an Italian artist named
Alessi. This gives a flavour, though sadly (?) without the background music.
Fortunately
the permanent exhibition upstairs was a bit better: Warhol, Jasper Johns, and this De Kooning:
Also an
enigmatic message for my youngest grandson:
Tomorrow we
are picking up a hire care and will venture further afield, before heading over
to meet up with friends near Regensburg on Tuesday.
