Culture and shopping in Paris

Paris

Yesterday's marathon car recovery worked fine, and the car is now parked in St Jean de Losne waiting for us to return. All the connections went well, and the drive wasn't too bad, though there was a lot of rain in Holland and Belgium, and heavy traffic around Antwerp and Brussels. I made a pit stop in Luxembourg, the EU's very own tax haven, filling my tank with cheap diesel  Once I was back in France, things also went well. I eventually got back to the boat at about 10.15, having left at 6.15.

This morning was devoted to a boring and major shop at Carrefour, since opportunities will be fewer as we head upstream and into the Burgundy Canal. We felt we had earned lunch at the famous Train Bleu restaurant at the Gare du Lyon. It was as spectacular as ever, and the meal was excellent – and good value:

After lunch we boarded the metro to ride out to the Museum of Modern Art for a major exhibition of works by Albert Marquet. Who? I hear you ask. Well, that was my reaction too. He came a bit after the Impressionist artists, and was particularly keen on water: ports, rivers and canals. Very good at reflections. Here is a reproduction of one of his paintings  cameras were not allowed, unfortunately.

In our view, he was definitely worth getting to know – and a gap hitherto.

Otherwise, not much photogenic to include: here are some views of the Arsenal harbour with the Place de la Bastille in the distance. They really cram the boats in here, though surprisingly for this time of year there are quite a few gaps:

Tomorrow we will be heading off upstream with our new friends Norman and Pat. They are coming round for a drink shortly to discuss where we should be heading for tomorrow night.
