A short, wet post

Peruwelz to Denain (France)

It rained all night, and was still raining when we left in the morning. In fact, the silent TV in the restaurant last night showed a manic weatherman grinning as he pointed out heavy rain for the whole of northern France today. Of course you expect rain in Belgium, but we had naively hoped that when we crossed the (invisible) border into France, just before lunch, the sun would miraculously break through.

It didn't.

We are on the canalized Escaut,River, which seems to be mainly used by commercial barges and has a dearth of places for small boats to tie up. We are on a derelict and deserted quayside tonight. Never mind. After some shopping, we have food and drink.

By the way, we went through a few locks behind a large German barge whose owner is obviously a passionate gardener. Not something you see every day!

Tomorrow we should hit the Canal du Nord and head on down towards Paris.
