Chilling out in the heat

Loenen to Utrecht

The Dutch heatwave was obviously destined to continue for a second day: the sun was up early, as we were too. We timed our arrival at the first bridge exactly at its opening time, 9 a.m. There were several bridges during the day, and most worked fine for us. The River Vecht continued to entrance. Here are a few photos:

As we came into the outskirts of Utrecht, the river is lined with floating homes. Most don't look very attractive, and one caused us some surprise with this notice in a window:

Once again we negotiated the weirdsluis, which has always before lived up to its name, and no different this time. We passed through after something of a contretemps with the lock-keepers  it would be tedious to go into details. Then it was the splendid run through the middle of the city, though a bit stressful at times with working barges limiting the width, canoeists and paddle boats, and craft coming the other way:

We reached the Utrecht harbour in good time to find a nice shady spot to moor, and had a relaxing lunch. It was still very hot, but we ventured out after lunch to a supermarket not far away that we had located last year: various essential supplies required, mostly liquid.

Then we sat out in our deckchairs on the bank, but slowly the sky started to cloud over and the wind got up. It looks as if summer has lasted all of two days around here!

Weather permitting, we will head off in the direction of Nijmegen tomorrow and check out the current on the big rivers.
